All children pick up a pencil or a crayon and try to express, in a drawing, that which excites them or impresses them. Most soon become interested in trying other things but some of us never put down that pencil or crayon or we put it down only to pick it up again. To that extent, all artists are like little children and we are the better for it.
Books and paintings are an attempt at permanence.
